About steel channels

Broadly speaking, steel channels are C-shaped (or U-shaped) sections of steel which have one flat side and two flanges facing onto an open side.

The depth of steel channels is given as the distance across the flat side, or between the flanges if they’re parallel. The width is measured as the distance across the flange, from the corner where it attaches to the flat side of the channel, to its open opposite edge.

Channels are typically seen as C-shaped sections, rather than U-shaped, and are commonly used as structural steel. Although they have a lower torsional strength than other structural steel such as i-beams, the lightness and flexibility of steel channels makes them a good replacement for lighter structural applications.

Steel channel applications

Steel channels are an extremely versatile type of steel which are available in a range of sizes and suited to a variety of applications. Most commonly, however, they are used for structural purposes.

When compared to other types of structural steel such as universal columns, steel channels are a lighter, more flexible option. Although this makes them more prone to twisting under certain conditions, they can be an invaluable part of any construction project if used correctly. Our team will be able to provide you with the proper guidance on whether steel channels are suitable for your project.

Our steel channels are commonly used for:

  • Columns and load bearing
  • Floor joists
  • Wall and door framing

However, their flexibility makes them suitable for a range of alternative applications.
