UK steel stockists were among those in the manufacturing supply chain given cause for celebration this week, as EEF revealed the vast majority of Brits prefer to buy goods manufactured in the UK.
The manufacturers’ organisation – which encompasses the industry body UK Steel – enlisted the help of YouGov to survey more than 2,000 British adults about their sentiments towards manufacturers.
They found that 72% would prefer to buy goods produced within the UK, and a massive 91% agree that manufacturing is an important contributor to economic growth – evidence that the UK is not a purely service-led economy after all.
EEF chief executive Terry Scuoler said: “Long gone are the days when some believed we could get by as a service economy and leave the rest of the world to produce goods for us.”
However, some perceptions of UK manufacturing were simply incorrect: 74% of the survey’s respondents said they believe output is down compared with 1982, when it has actually increased by a quarter in that time.
Despite this, the indications are good for UK steel stockists who are able to demonstrate that their materials are sourced from British steel producers.
